It is often incorrectly assumed that the insertion of a UPS before a PC based system will provide protection. In its basic form, the UPS is designed to provide a short period of power stability in the event of a mains loss. Some enlightened manufacturers include basic surge protection to the mains incoming line, although this is frequently at its most basic form and capable of withstanding only the mildest of induced surges.


Professor Chao Tzee Ching, director of Singapore's Institute of Science and Forensic Medicine, points out that the mean number of lightning deaths per million is comfortably low 0.2 in the UK but climbs to 0.6 for the US, 1.5 for SA and culminated in a whopping 1.7 for Singapore, which exceeds the annual number of American citizens fired.
